The Energy Region
The Karlsruhe Energy Region introduces itself:
It is impossible to imagine our lives without energy, especially electricity.
A constant energy supply is a basic requirement in the functioning of a modern society, that is to say, the Karlsruhe Technology Region.
As a constant energy supply is important for the future, and fossil fuels like coal and oil will have ran out in about 50 years time, it is important to think about future energy concepts. Furthermore, the rapid price increase in the energy sector should be a motive to think about energy efficiency and new developments, so that we stay at the forefront economically.
The Karlsruhe region would like to be at the cutting-edge in the efficient use of energy. To that end, the district council has adopted a climate protection concept in which it will stress how important it is to create effective synergy in order to reduce the energy intensity.
The data of the Agenda 21 project team shows how innovative Karlsruhe is in the energy sector. In Karlsruhe in 2006 the following amounts of energy were produced- 3,905,510 kilowatts (kW) wind energy, 241,114 kW solar power, 7,086,896 kW bio-energy and 79,379 kW hydraulic power. Consequently, a total of 11,312,899 kW was produced using renewable energy sources.
