Solar Power
In Karlsruhe both photo-voltaic and solar equipment are used. In the case of the former, light energy is converted into electrical energy using solar cells.
Using this method, electricity is generated from the 1000m² surface of the roof of the Zentrums für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), which flows directly to the tram electricity system. The 100 kW facility is the most productive of the city.
The Karlsruhe Public Services also have a so-called sun blind, with an area of 475m² and an output of 50KW.
Photo-voltaic equipment is also used by numerous Karlsruhe Schools, Karlsruhe public services and Karlsruhe-West dumping ground as well as many private and corporate facilities. Further pictures can be found on www.zdee.de
At the thermal solar plant, solar energy is used in heating water and supporting the heating system. This method of energy production benefits the Rüppurr and Wolfartsweier outdoor swimming pools, the Rappenwört swimming pool and the Bureau for Waste Control. In Karlsruhe there are also many private solar facilities of this kind.
